Dynamic Brake Fans.

Under heavy braking from a Medium to High speed, the traction motors are connected to a resistor bank to improve braking. Due to the heat produced by the resistor bank it is necessary to have cool air forced over them with fans, this feature is enabled on Function 6.

The dynamic brake fans do not operate during slow speed braking or for small reductions in speed.

Skipfire Mode

The GE engines include a fuel saving mode, when the loco is left at idle a reduced number of cylinders are fired, this helps to improve fuel efficiency. When this function (F10) is enabled, the engine will automatically enter Skip Fire mode once the loco is stationary, or a few seconds later if the loco is already stationary.

It is also possible to have the skipfire to randomly come on during idle, rather than having to enable it all the time via F10. To do this set cv48 to 1, to return skipfire to full manual control set cv48 to 0. You will need to remove track power after setting this value for it to take effect.

Auxiliary Power Unit (F11)

To help save on fuel, the Class 70 has an Auxiliary Power Unit, that allows all the systems to be powered up for diagnostics and testing purposes without having to fire up the whole engine.

Cold Start

This project features a cold start option, when the loco is first started up after the power has been interrupted it will automatically go through a Cold start sequence. Any subsequent shutdown and restarting of the engine results in a warm start.
