Hornby ‘00’ HST Sound Installation

This document show you how to fit a Hornby HST with a set of Zimo/Rail Exclusive speakers. In this installation we use a speaker rated for 4ohms, it may be necessary to use a higher ohmage speaker depending upon the decoder such as those required for the Hornby TTS decoders that require a minimum of 8ohms.

The installation is quite straight forward, we have used two speakers of roughly the same volume output, it is possible to use a speaker set up in the dummy car that will provide a higher volume, however it would result in an unbalanced pair of power cars.

1. Cut 4 pieces of plasticard strip (approx 13mm in height) and fix them in the positions shown below, we used 1x2mm strip but almost any size will, these allow the speaker to sit on top of the strip clear of the bogie.





2. We fitted the Zimo LS40x22x09, as this was just the right width and height to fit in without causing a problem with clearance. The Rail Exclusives one is just a little bit too high at 10mm to give adequate clearance in all models


3. For the Dummy power car we used the Rail Exclusives SP40x20x10 speaker, we did have to clip a couple of spigots from the base of the chassis to allow the speaker to sit flat

While you have the body off, most sound decoders can drive more than 2 physical outputs, so why not do the modification to get the Cab lights to work independently of the head/tail lights
